The Hotel Green Solution House (Hotel GSH ) is located in Rønne on Bornholm Island, a popular Danish tourist destination. In 2021 the hotel will expand, opening a new wing with 24 rooms, a conference room and a rooftop spa.
Wood - a material used both for the structures and for the insulation and finishes - will make it possible to obtain a construction with a carbon footprint that is not only neutral but even negative.
The new wing is designed by 3XN and GXN , as had already happened in 2015 for the first core of the hotel.
Wood shows us the sustainable way to the future
Despite the pandemic that has hit the hotel industry hard, GSH Hotel Manager Trine Richter expects a steady stream of Danish clients in Bornholm for both business and pleasure. At the same time he hopes that the new hotel can be an example to follow towards the use of building materials other than steel and concrete, which are the primary materials used for construction even today.
According to the International Environment Agency, the construction sector accounts for around 40 percent of the world's CO2 emissions. Steel and concrete represent a great burden to the environment and are responsible for a total of 16% of the world's CO2 emissions.

Recycled materials used for the finishes
In addition to being made of wood, the new wing of the hotel also includes the use of materials derived from the construction of furniture and debris from local granite quarries that will be used for the decoration of the conference room. The building is also naturally ventilated through skylights and open areas, which eliminates the need for mechanical solutions.
One of the distinctive features of the hotel is that all components have been designed for their recycling, with reversible connections that will allow the materials to be separated at the end of the building's life cycle, avoiding landfilling as 'demolition materials'. as unfortunately happens with conventional construction systems.
“ It is a privilege to work with a developer who makes no compromises in their approach to sustainability and the circular economy. In this way, the project is making the impossible a reality. In addition to setting the stage for a successful business, I hope the new project can help show others the potential of timber construction. If in Denmark we want to be able to achieve our climate goals, the construction sector has to think and act differently, and there is therefore a great need for lighthouse projects like this. “Said Kasper Guldager Jensen, architect, 3XN partner and founder of GXN.
The first core of the GSH hotel was inaugurated in 2015 and was designed by 3XN themselves and by GXN - the research center founded by the studio, oriented towards sustainability and specializing in circular design, behavioral design and digital design.
The new wing of the GSH Hotel is expected to be completed before summer 2021 .
